Kata: Heian Nidan

A kata is a martial arts form comprised of different techniques including blocks, strikes, and kicks. It's a choreographed series of defenses and counters from different possible attacks. The kata I had to perform for my purple belt test was called Heian Nidan. (Han NEE-dahn)

For my green belt test, I'll be performing Heian Sandan. (Han Sahn-dahn) It's one of the shortest katas in Ai-Mute Shotokan. I also think it's one of vaugest katas I've ever learned. In kata, there are movements with obvious block-counter interpretations and movements that are not so obvious. Heian Sandan has a lot of strange, harder to interpret movements which make it a lot more interesting to learn.
